Expanding Culture: Reflections from Louisiana

What does it mean for an art museum to expand its cultural role today? And how can museums move beyond the boundaries of the exhibition space while remaining true to their identity?

These questions shaped Expanding Culture, the workshop held at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark.

For two days, museum professionals and researchers came together to explore how art museums are responding to changing cultural and societal expectations. Representatives from Louisiana, Zentrum Paul Klee, MUDAM Luxembourg, Lenbachhaus, Belvedere, MUNCH and The Metropolitan Museum of Art contributed perspectives from their institutions and discussed different ways of expanding museum practice – from programming and collaboration to organizational structures and digital engagement.

Louisiana provided a particularly inspiring setting for these conversations. Rather than looking at “expansion” simply as a question of doing more, the workshop opens-up a broader discussion about what happens when museums rethink where and how cultural encounters can take place. How can an institution reach audiences beyond its physical location? What kinds of internal structures make experimentation possible? And how can digital formats become part of a museum’s cultural practice rather than merely an extension of its communication?
